Science fiction, on the whole, has captivated movie-goers, novel readers, and television enthusiasts equally for generations. While many people would classify sci-fi itself as a genre, there is much more to it than that. It is a very broad genre that truly is made up of a large variety of smaller sub genres.

Another misconception is that it is based on fantasy. Fantasy and science fiction are closely tied, but there is a main difference between the two. Producers always finds a way to justify the storyline or interactions between characters in a scientific way that makes the story plausible. On the other hand, fantasy media portrays impossible situations with no set explanation. Fantasy just allows your imagination to run free. Science fiction always gives you an explanation which lets you believe more in the story and focus more on the plot rather than question the seemingly impossible aspects.

One of the great parts about science fiction is the timelessly classic feeling that older movies contain. Sure it’s great to see the big bad new age films with explosions and multi-million dollar budgets, but there is something to be said for the old classics. Even with massive budgets and all the high talent actors possible, some of the new movies can never truly convey the imagination and creativity of the originals.

Science fiction novels and movies are put together as a way to entertain the mind with thoughts of the true possibilities of science and the future. Unlike other genres where superheroes simply fly free or spin webs, science fiction captivates audiences because it provides a way to imagine a world where the possibilities are endless. What could be possible in the future and what sort of technology might we possibly be able to look forward to? Sure many of the ideas inherent within this genre seem far fetched at times, but there is always a basis of reality that often gets fans excited about the future endeavors of our world.

Here are some of the most famous science fiction authors, who are considered to be the greatest of all times:

• Arthur C Clarke: He captured the imagination of the world with his Space Odyssey series, in particular the novel 2001: A Space Odyssey. This novel was made into a popular film and helped to bring science fiction back into mainstream cinema.

• Isaac Asimov: He is one of the most creative and productive writers in the history of science fiction writing. He has edited or published over 500 books. His Robot series and Foundation series ended becoming the foundation for many new sci-fi writers. I, Robot was made into a highly popular film starring Will Smith and it managed to break many box office records.

• Jules Verne: His books were ever so popular and took time to be translated in English. He wrote about travel and much to it. He wrote about things that were impossible for a human mind to even think of and explored that side of the world that we got addicted to. His books Journey to the Center of the Earth, 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea and Around the World in 80 Days are classics. They were written at a time when space travel and submarines were considered figment of imagination.

• H.G. Wells: Undoubtedly the most famous and influential sci-fi writer. His book The Time Machine is the ultimate sci-fi novel ever to be written. Then there are other books, The War of the Worlds and The Invisible Man, that are classics. H.G. Wells ensured that the genre never fades into oblivion. Hollywood still loves to make his books into movies.

Identity theft occurs when someone uses your personal information, usually without your knowledge and especially without your consent, to commit fraud or theft. Although this problems existed before the Internet or the extensive use of computers, these two have made it far more easier for skillful frauds to take advantage of others inability to detect such a criminal act and use people’s names, addresses, bank accounts, personal identification numbers or credit card information to commit unlawful acts. In fact, the problem of someone invading one’s privacy has greatly been examined over the years as extremely well-designed systems monitor others actions and report them to those interested in operating under another person’s identity.

Since such evil schemes are not a matter of science fiction anymore, it is possible for people to be caught into these highly skilled individuals’ nets and spend weeks of agonizing thoughts on where or how their personal information might have been used to harm others or themselves. For that reason, after a series of complaints from victims to financial institutions, banks have begun to check alleged frauds and claims that identity theft has taken place. With multiple incidents reported in the last five years of such malicious intent, users of computers and portable digital assistants have increased their demand to be offered the necessary security measures whenever they attempt to visit websites and need to report highly personal information online in order to purchase a product or service. But keeping yourself aware of such dangerous individuals is not enough. Due to the technologies evolving, one should frequently update the necessary security systems so as to minimize the stress associated with online navigation. Finally, avoiding publishing personal codes, passwords, credit card numbers and any other personal information, if not adequately reassured by trusted sources that possible threats can and will be detected, is considered a must in today’s vulnerable online environment. Be aware and be prepared.

There has generally been a tradition in which science fiction books have been written and this hasn’t really changed. There are however some authors who invent new styles of writing and it is common knowledge these are the ones who write science fiction books. This is probably because people who write science fiction books are so knowledgeable about their topic that they are able to write about the possible but also about the sometimes impossible situations and make them believable. Science Fiction writers have a completely different writing style which shows in their stories.

There are authors who wrote books about the most fearful things of their time – a good example is HG Wells. It is common knowledge of the panic caused by the reading of his book, War of the Worlds. It is easy to get completely engrossed in a science fiction book and believe what is written. HG Wells was a prime example of science fiction writing which was both realistic and believable, especially for the time. Telling a wild story just makes it more unbelievable – write your tall story in a believable way and include some truths to make it realistic.

Ray Bradbury is well known as the author of Fahrenheit 451 as well as being the best known science fiction writer in the world. Fahrenheit 451 is read across the country by high school students as part of their curriculum. He is also well known for writing abstract stories which aren’t able to be explained immediately. Many authors now use this form in their writing.

The world is full of people who excel in their particular fields. Many are able to leave a huge legacy behind which has a lasting effect on the whole world.
