A good query letter catches the agent’s attention and is the first step in how to get a novel published. What should be included in your query letter?

The first paragraph should be a brief synopsis of your novel. No more than 100 words, perhaps 150 words. This synopsis is written in the present tense. You want to hook the agent’s curiosity to read more. It’s a challenge to condense a 100,000 novel down to 150 words, but important you do. Think of the synopsis as a back cover blurb. It gives just enough information to create excitement about the novel. If you need some examples go to the bookstore and look at the back cover blurbs of books in the same genre as yours.

The second paragraph describes the market for your novel and includes the genre. Are you aiming for romance readers, cozy mystery readers or is your book a young adult novel? You can compare your book to other similar books, saying something like “readers of Sandra Brown will enjoy TITLE OF YOUR BOOK. Mention the word count and that the novel is completed.

The third paragraph includes your background as a writer and a brief bio. If you have writing credits make sure you mention them. Many agents don’t consider a vanity/subsidy book or self-published book as a writing credit. If you include the title they will look it up on amazon.com to see who the publisher is.

The third paragraph is where you can describe any special experience you have that could become a publicity hook or gives you an insight other writers might not have. For example if you are a pastry chef and your heroine is also a pastry chef that would be relevant.

End the letter by thanking the agent for their time and consideration and asking if they would like to see the first few chapters or a completed manuscript. The purpose of the query letter is to motivate the agent to ask for the manuscript.

The query letter should be no more than one page single spaced. You could also include a 2 or 3 page synopsis of your novel, but don’t include the first chapter or the entire manuscript.

There is a commonality to the behavior patterns of successful writers, and a commonality to the behavior patterns of writers who just can’t get started, can’t get finished, or stall out at their first or third book.

Successful, prolific writers:

1) Write every day. That’s EVERY day. They sit down, open their veins, and bleed into their computers. Yes, it can be painful, but if you don’t maintain this kind of regularity, rust creeps in. The connection between heart, mind and fingers is broken. And we mistake the struggle for our natural state.

2) Read every day. Reading is priming the pump. It is modeling successful behavior. It is increasing vocabulary, studying plot and characterization, and entertaining the little subconscious demons and angels who actually do the deep work. Never neglect this.

3) Set deadlines and quotas. There is a certain amount of work to be done, on a daily basis. It need not be some huge amount-a page a day will create a book a year!

4) Create a writing space, a place that feels comfortable to them. This is both a physical space (a desk) and a psychological space (created with music, posters, familiar objects, etc.) It may also be a temporal space-a specific time of day or night that they write.

5) Have specific goals. They have committed to being professional writers. This is how they define themselves, and they never forget it. If you accept this definition, then you MUST behave as a professional writer, on a daily basis, or it causes emotional discomfort. They are willing to accept this friendly prod.

6) Don’t listen to the negative voices in their heads. Everyone has them. The voices tell you you can’t, you mustn’t, it isn’t good enough. You must find a way to tell the voices to shut up, to ignore them, or to quiet them. Any flow-based activity will help here: meditation, Tai Chi, yoga, running, Sufi breathing exercises, martial arts…the list is endless. Find one.

7) Are committed to the long-term. They know that if they spend an hour or three a day, every day, for a decade, they will build their career.

Expose themselves to criticism and rejection. In other words, they FINISH their projects, and then SUBMIT those finished projects to editors and agents.

9) Involve other people in their “master mind” group. Successful writers know other writers. And readers. And editors. And agents. They befriend them, recruit them, get feedback from them, and listen to the feedback. This is their “brain trust.” Unsuccessful writers hide in their offices, never finish their work, never send it out to risk rejection.

10) Have W.I.T.—they will do Whatever It Takes to ethically reach their dreams, to become the best they can be. They never quit. They know that success is based less on talent or “who you know” than persistence, hard work, and honesty.

The recent trend in the recruitment of teachers for schools have shown scarcity in the number of good and dedicated teachers who can understand the child psychology. It has become a serious problematic area and the education system is facing a big challenge in this regard.

Potential teachers to impart education to the students are reducing in numbers and hence the provision of special education for the teachers has been developed. Now the teachers cannot afford to dedicate time in full-time courses and once again begin studies. So to help them in the most convenient way, online education has developed courses to train the teachers to help out students in their learning. This is a real novel approach the online education has initiated to enrich the entire education system.

Specially educated teachers can be widely categorized into two sections. The first category comprises of those teachers who conduct regular classes in the school curriculum. Another section of teachers is those who teach the disabled children in the schools exceptionally meant for them.

Online education has courses for both the sections of teachers to guide them in the best possible way. The biggest advantage of such courses is that the teachers can continue the course along with the job and get refined ideas with real experience at work. On the other hand this is a boon to the students because the teachers can help them with exact guidance to build up their future.

Teachers have the biggest role in building up the nation. If the teachers are inefficient in any aspect the whole society can be put at stake. The school authorities must take care of this aspect and make it mandatory for the teachers to get hold of the specialized training to impart quality education to the students.

Educational requirements can only then be met in a broader perspective and better way if the teachers are more concerned in not just what they are teaching to the students but in the approach they are teaching or giving lessons. A good and potent teacher must have the ability to read the child’s mind and then incorporate something in his/her thoughts. The real spirit of education lies in the approach of education and online education for teachers is just a way to show this route.

If you’ve done any freewriting now is the time to develop a plot or a theme from those writings. Write down all your ideas for characters, events, and places. On indexcards flesh out your characters, tell about their hair color, eye color, build, education, job, hobbies. The more you know about your actors, the more believable they will be when you write your book.

Select a time frame and location. What do you want to write: mystery, historical, fantasy, or ethnic romance novels? Make that decision and then research the market and write to sell in that market. Study book covers, themes, and plots. What do the best sellers look like? Don’t reinvent the wheel.

In the first few pages of writing you must create intense interest. Book publishers and readers usually will not go much farther than the opening paragraphs. That old phrase,”if only I had known” did it’s job at providing suspense and interest. Can you think of an equally attention getting phrase? Of course you can!

Now, create your main character and endow them with human qualities. No one is perfect and they shouldn’t be either. Let their faults show. Fill out their index card with all the details of a living human being. Perhaps you can base your character on someone you know. Just be careful not to be too blatant writing your descriptions.

All characters must have a reason for being there. They should add something to the story. It may not be significant but they must help move the story along. And allow lots of dialog. Let your characters speak as they would in real life.

The main components to a romance novel are:
Interest = This is the boy/girl thing
Conflict = This is where they butt heads
Resolution = This is where all problems are resolved and they live happily ever after. Yes… give them a happy ending!

To the good part!! You could be at your own very first book signing in just a few months! That is not an outrageous claim. Thousands are doing it right now.

Romance novels are extremely popular and are the best-selling books. It has been estimated that there are well over two thousand romance novels that are published each year and there are over fifty million people that read romance novels. Normally a romance novel is going to possess certain themes consistently and are all grouped together by all of these themes.

Romance novels can include a similar time period, setting, type of conflict and level of sensuality. Normally, all of the companies that publish romance novels have a certain guidelines that all of their authors use when they are creating their new stories. The sole purpose of romance novels is to provide the reader with an escape from reality. During this time, the individual is able to ignore all of their responsibilities temporarily and transport themselves into the romance novel, pretending that they are the damsel in distress. The overall ability to have the ability to live out this romance fantasy is a very good way for some people to find a release from all of their daily troubles.

Within the marketplace, romance novels are the best sellers. You are able to purchase romance novels in each and every drug, discount retail and grocery establishments all around the country. You also have the opportunity to join several different book clubs so that you are able to automatically receive all of the latest romance novels each month. You don’t have to go out and purchase them; they will just keep mailing them out to you until you stop your membership.

The majority of individuals don’t purchase romance novels because there are so many that come out each month. They just go to their local library and borrow the books for a couple of weeks and then they will return them and get some more. There are some libraries that will sell all of the older copies of the books for ten cents each so that you are able to keep them just as long as your desire and you will never have to return them.

Even though the majority of women really hate to have to admit that they actually enjoy all of these romance novels, there really is nothing for them to be ashamed about.

Before you even start writing your book, it is wise to do some research. Do you know if the topic you have in mind is hot right now? Are there similar books on the market and are they selling well? A good way to find out is by reading newspapers, magazines, newsletter and ezines that cater to writers. Join writer’s groups and forums, as well talk to other people in the writing and publishing field. It is wise to be sure you have a potential audience for your book ahead of time.

Among good reads, the classic detective fiction novel should come in somewhere near the top, mixed with various other genres. Such collections as The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes is still a good seller and can be found at nearly any bookstore due to the still common popularity. Such readers may occasionally have to special order some items though; due to the length of time those novels have been in existence. If there were more good fictional detective novels gracing the shelves of the bookstores today, there would not still be the demand for those fantastic pieces that were created so many years ago.

The reader requires constant entertainment and most of these classic detective fiction novels can provide that to them easily. Although some of the terms and phrases are now somewhat outdated, it is still a most interesting read for the well versed reader to pick up and follow. The books that aren’t exactly highlighted or featured any longer always pique the interest of the most self respected reader. To find such books, one must simply do the research and ask if need be since there are many that are still in print.

In these stories, the reader embarks upon an interesting journey through time to a world where things are still much simpler than the life of today. There are still crimes however, since that is what the book focuses on in depth. A theft may have occurred and subsequently caused a murder. The hero is, of course, the detective. This character is proficient in the means of detecting crime. His attitudes and morals can be described by the author in several different ways, but the general view of the detective is intelligence. If the detective is not perceived as intelligent, how should he be able to solve the crimes that the police cannot? The author makes it interesting of course, using clever phrases and great character descriptions to involve the reader as much as possible in the storyline. The reader often thinking or trying to figure out who the culprit is that committed this crime.

Assuming that you know what genre or category your writing falls into, there are a few things to consider. You must be aware that there are certain conventions of structure, character and conversation that automatically come with specific genres. For instance, writers of science fiction often use the term “faster-than-light travel” or “warp speed.” The sci-fi writer needs to know how and where such terms are used, if he or she intends to use them. In mystery writing, the plot generally begins with a discovery, such as a dead body and ends when the mystery is solved. A great way to become familiar with the conventions of your particular genre is to read similar books by other writers.

Suspense novels are probably the easiest novels to write. Suspense novels require a simple formula, which will make your work truly suspenseful. Follow this basic recipe, and you’re well on your way to building a whole library of successful suspense novels.

Decide your topic. Many people who wish to craft best-selling suspense novels struggle with this first step. The biggest problem is they get too wound up in trying to come up with something that’s never been done, assuming that they’ll land a number one best seller. Forget trying so hard to do something that hasn’t been done, and just settle on something you know, even if the subject has been done. Then work on an interesting twist. Start your suspense novels at the end, rather than at the beginning. As is the case with any good project, successful suspense novels are crafted with the ending in mind first. Then the artist can return to the beginning and begin building to that end. This is how quality suspense novels are created. If your suspense novels have killers or conspirators, wait as long as possible to reveal the perpetrators. In my first suspense novel, The League, my editor noticed that I revealed the perpetrator about six chapters and ninety pages before the end. He loved the story but said that it would be vastly improved, if I could keep the readers in suspense a bit longer.

Some science fiction novels fill us with ideas. Some we admire as works of art. And some do it all. At their best, these novels help us understand the social pressures for and consequences of innovation. Here’s a short list of books I’ve recommended to friends, students, and science fiction fans, to scientists, businesspeople, and cousins in New Jersey:
1. The Island of Dr. Moreau (H. G. Wells, 1896)
This timeless fable of biological manipulation explores scientific power in the hands of an imperialist unbound by community or ethical standards.
2. We (Yevgeny Zamyatin, 1920)
In this early and perhaps greatest 20th-century dystopia, the mechanization of public and private life motivates a stunning cautionary tale.
3. War With the Newts (Karel Capek, 1936)
This far-ranging satire explores the interplay of industrialization, class, race, and international politics in a world of commodified labor.
4. Limbo (Bernard Wolfe, 1953)
What happens to people and to society when the rich, both wounded and hale, can choose to remake their bodies?
5. A Canticle for Leibowitz (Walter M. Miller Jr., 1959)
Science and religion play against each other in this great post-holocaust novel.
6. Babel-17 (Samuel R. Delany, 1966)
In a world that is awash in future technologies, language is manipulated both for and against the preservation of our way of life.
7. The Moon Is a Harsh Mistress (Robert A. Heinlein, 1966) Extraterrestrial colonies sound like a fine idea until you begin to ask who goes, who stays, and who controls the relationships with the home world.
8. Stand on Zanzibar (John Brunner, 1968)
In an overcrowded world, what does personal space mean, and how does its diminution change our mores and our demands on technology?
9. The Left Hand of Darkness (Ursula K. LeGuin, 1969)
We are shaped by the natural and cultural environment we inhabit. How much of that environment is natural, and how much do we make ourselves?

10. The Futurological Congress (Stanislaw Lem, 1971)
The future grows from our imagination, but our imagination is constrained by our expectations, our language, and by invisible technologies.
11. Man Plus (Frederik Pohl, 1976)
If you lose a leg, are you still yourself? And if you gain wings? And what if you remake yourself perfectly for an inhuman environment?
12. Where Late the Sweet Birds Sang (Kate Wilhelm, 1976)
In a world of exhausted fertility, will the technologies of reproduction bind us together, change us all forever, or separate us from our offspring?
13. China Mountain Zhang (Maureen F. McHugh, 1992)
In a backwater America, outsiders dominate through the strength of their technologies. This novel questions whether American values of individualism can survive.
14. Galatea 2.2 (Richard Powers, 1995)
The arts and the sciences make up two different cultures. Artificial intelligence thrives at the point where they intersect.
15. Calculating God (Robert J. Sawyer, 2000)
If we are not alone, what does the Other make of us? And if the Other is more powerful yet seems to want to help us, what do we make of the Other?
